[At some point, probably when Nami's busy scolding Luffy about some stupid thing he's in the process of doing and Law's either pointedly ignoring all of them or getting roped into said horrible shenanigans, Sanji approaches Sabo in their cramped, pirate infested room.
It's casual, nothing out of the ordinary from anyone else's standpoint. After all, Sanji'd served all of them dinner. And what's so weird about a chef making sure everyone in his care ate?
Either way, he's sliding a plate of familiar looking food in front of the revolutionary, just standing nearby and lighting a cigarette near the window. He's no good at talking about this kind of shit, but... Sabo was good to that miserable kid not too long ago.
That's not something Sanji can easily forget about. Not now, at least.]
[On the contrary.. Sabo was more than happy to have helped the kid back when there was that bug infestation. His dreams.. his ideals... they're pretty nostalgic and something he can relate to very well. Something he sees in his younger brother through the chef. He was looking away from the other blond when he was passed the plate, but he immediately smelled the freshness and deliciousness coming from the familiar food he had eaten prior to everyone reverting back to their normal ages.
Sabo looks up at the man, confused as to why he seems very cold to the guy while ignoring the rest of the noise of the small-spaced room of pirates. He then smiles, trying to remind him of the time from before.]
Sanji, you were really a cute kid when I saw you. And to know how to cook the same dish back then was pretty terrific. [He grabs the spoon from the plate and gobbles down some of the rice with vegetables and shrimp.] Where did you learn to do that?
[It's not that Sanji's being cold... it's just. He doesn't know how to handle these kinds of situations. He's never known how to, honestly. It's too emotional, too personal, too... close. To what's been happening to him back home.
To things he hasn't actually spoken to his friends about.
He takes a drag of his cigarette as Sabo speaks, scowling as he blows smoke towards the little gap to outside.]
Books. [... ahhhhh this wasn't the kind of conversation he wanted to have about this. Goddamnit. He knows he has to at least be a little more open if he wants to ask Sabo to do him a favor and forget everything he was told about Sanji's past.] That kid was a shit cook. I'm amazed you didn't get sick from what he was making.
[No matter how real his past was, no matter how much it's been biting him in the ass lately, he's still not quite able to identify with that weak little brat.]
Nah, it was all good. [Why talk in 3rd person though.. he ponders. You were that kid weren't you? The same kid who cooked the same exact meal Sanji had just served in front of him. The same one who had so much passion for cooking, wanting to grow up to be a chef! He remembers it pretty well.]
It was more than hearty, even if it didn't have meat in it. Pretty good to the taste. [He wouldn't complain. It's food he can eat. He takes a bite chewing a scoop of the shrimp, peas, and rice while looking up at the blond man's digusted expression with a bit of confusion.]
What's wrong? [With his mouth stuffed, seeing the man simmering the smoke outside that small area.]
[... yeah, this idiot's Luffy's brother all right. Sanji can't help but snort a little at the meat comment, his lips twitching upward just slightly, despite the tension otherwise lining his body.]
You don't need meat in a meal to make it hearty. Despite the shitty seasoning, it had enough in it to technically be considered a meal. [Unlike the dish Sabo was eating. A dish that Sanji could make easy as breathing now. A dish full of protein and grains and vegetables, all things to give someone lasting energy and keep a stomach full and satisfied.]
Nothing. [Is the automatic lie answer, followed by another stream of smoke being blown out to the night sky. He watches Sabo eat for a moment more, feeling a bit of the tension draining away as his mind goes from the past to the present, from shitty families and spilled secrets to the simple joy of watching someone eat something he's made.]
It's good, huh? [He can't help the grin, just like he can't help the question. He'll never get tired of this, will never be able to stop his heart from soaring every time someone eats one of his meals.]
Pretty good. I'd say... you definitely gained some skill in cooking this. [Not that it mattered too much.. the rice with the seafood and vegetables was pretty delicious when little Sanji cooked it, and it's definitely improved from what the older Sanji had prepared. He takes another bite of the rice out of the spoon, looking up at the other blond with his back turned toward him.]
I suppose so.. food is food after all. [He happily grins, his teeth ever showing that bright expression of his.] Still it wouldn't help if there was a little meat in there. [He snorts, trying not to be obvious at his amusement with Sanji's subtle expression of the twitching.]
You were really cute as a kid though... very much passionate in cooking as you are now. [He closes his eyes, as he takes in the smell of the cuisine. Though as good as it was now, he can't help but remember how similar the smell was when he first ate the dish from the same person. It was rather recent nostalgia.]
I got my ass kicked until I got it right. [There's fondness behind that statement, though. Not in his the words himself, or even in his voice, but in the way his lips twitch upward at the corners, the way his shoulders seem slightly more relaxed, the way that near-permanent furrow between his eyebrows smooths out just for a few seconds.
Even now, with everything he's been trying to sort out from back home, he can't help the way he feels about the Baratie. About the family waiting to hear all about his stupid, impossible dream.
Of course, Sabo bringing up the brat undoes everything. Has Sanji's shoulders tensing, his face scrunching up into a scowl as his fingers dig into his arms where they're crossed defensively over his chest.]
I didn't know what the hell I was talking about. [He glances across the room, both making sure that the others are still suitably distracted with their food and each other as well as taking a bit of comfort in the familiar chaos still unfolding in front of them.]
Listen, that kid-- [He pauses, scowls, chews on the end of his cigarette in aggravation.] Forget what you heard. There's a lot of shit he hadn't figured out yet.
[Sabo looks over at Sanji and his scowling frustration. It seemed like he was keeping in something he hasn't heard of from the chef. Even though it's only been some time since he's met another one of Luffy's crewmates, he can't help but see that it is something unsusual.. especially since he looked like he was making sure no one else was seeing these things.
He puts down the spoon then, as the plate by now was still only half consumed. Normally, he'd be able to eat the whole rice but seeing Sanji's expression with such stress, one would wonder... what was going on with his mind? As opposed to how he was a kid.]
The kid still had aspirations that he wasn't confident in... upholding standards to family it seems. [He can't blame him, he knows this from his own biological parents.] I wouldn't say it'd be easily forgettable anyway.
Though getting your ass kicked. I got mine kicked a lot when I was with Luffy and Ace back when we were kids. [Because this fondness and tough love with the cooking though was something he could relate. The rough housing with Dadan and Garp he had for some time with both Ace and Luffy... though it wasn't as passionate and catered to fine-tuning a skill.. how he was raised from that period was somewhat similar. He would know so.]
[One day soon Sabo will learn that Sanji is always at two extremes. He's either blissfully happy, or he's pissed off and scowling. That's just how he works. Even his "neutral" expression is pretty damn threatening, though he blames that entirely on working with Patty and Carne for too many goddamn years.
But this scowl... this scowl is a product of stress. Of the unbelievable build up of the shit he'd gone through at home, of the way he's been trying to work himself back down since he'd come back to Oska. The way he's been dancing around needlessly worrying his crew with things they honestly couldn't help. The wedding, his family, all of that is just something he's going to have to deal with alone.]
Like I said, he didn't know what he was talking about. [If Sabo had spoken to the same kid just a few months later, things would have been... different. Sanji would have been exhausted, beaten down. He would have known his father didn't care about him, that his brothers only didn't beat him to death when they visited because it was too fun to watch him cry. He would have met a child locked in an iron mask, because his father couldn't bear to even look at the failure of his own flesh and blood.]
So you were with the bandits? [This is a better topic. A more neutral one, for now. He still needs to make sure Sabo won't tell Luffy and Nami anything they don't need to know, but for now... this is fine.] Leave it to Luffy to forget to mention how many brothers he had then.
[NOT THAT YOU'RE ONE TO TALK, YOU SECRET QUADRUPLET JFC]
Yeah.. I could tell. [It's from this expression of his that it was obvious.... he remembers how insecure Sanji was as a kid. It was still pretty vivid from when he encountered him. He said he wanted to prove how good he was to his father how he could be something..at least from what he could see. It seems unavoidable and seeing how unsure he seemed back then.. at least from the front. He seemed like he wanted his attention though. However, living up to those standards, and getting punished if they're not up to snuff... was something he wasn't a fan of himself. He knows this from personal experience in his own early upbringing.]
I was. I fought some off the train with Hanzo but he was being a party pooper not showing me more of his dragon summoning... [He leaves a bit of a disgrunted face as he does so. Not the stressful kind, but more of a unsatisfied look that would make it seem like the fun he had was ruined.. or stopped in this case. DRAGONS ARE REALLY COOL, OKAY. He has this undying interest with him that probably originated from his fist fighting style.]
Not mentioning his brothers... hahahaha that's Luffy for you. [He's never really mad at the little brother... because he knows how he was back then, and he seems to have not changed much from when he was a kid. Rather, he's pretty amused he wasn't brought up at all. He doesn't mind though. It's usually Ace that he always talks about when it comes to brothers anyway.. at least to him. Sanji, how dare you keep secrets about having siblings wow]
[And here Sanji had been thinking Sabo was almost... too together to be one of Luffy's idiot older brothers. He was definitely nice enough, had that same "could care less about the world's opinion of him" air that Ace and Luffy had in spades, but he still just seemed a little too... normal. To really fit into that family. But then there's that little glint in his eye, the way his face scrunches up when he talks about dragons. Something that hints at him being just as unreasonable as the other two.]
Hanzo's a brainless piece of shit. [Because... that's... how you talk about guys your captain has invited to be a part of the crew, apparently.] If you want dragon, go to Punk Hazard when you're back home. I think there's still one guarding the place.
[Sanji pauses, takes a drag of his cigarette.] That's Luffy for you. [Is finally what he agrees with, shifting slightly so he's leaning against the wall, facing Sabo a bit more than he was before.] The first we heard of Ace was when there was a wall of flame between us and the marines back in Alabasta. Makes sense the first we would have heard of you would be during that mess in Dressrosa.
[Though he has to wonder, would Sanji have ever known about Sabo otherwise? Did Luffy tell Nami, Brook, and Chopper about Sabo once he landed in Zou? Probably not, it wouldn't have been interesting information by then. Franky probably would have passed on the story. Usopp, too. Though by that point whether or not Sabo would have been described as the man in front of him or an actual fire breathing dragon is debatable.
... would Sanji have ever known, then, that their captain at least had one brother come back to life and stay that way?]
[Maybe.. maybe not. Who knows. Sabo was presumably dead at the time when he got shot down by the marines at a young age. There would've been no evidence of him being alive, except for Dragon who had saved him that day. His memory was wiped of his two other brothers and their childhood, and seeing as having traumatic drama with his parents even with no recollection of them, there had been no occurrence or intention of him going back for a time.
It was only after Ace had passed away and reading over the newspaper that these memories had resurfaced.. and with that the realization of a found family member... gone.
He faces down, his hat tipped downward at the other blond, smirking.]
Ace, huh? [It's uncanny to hear how his display to Luffy and the other Strawhats was similar to that of the other. Pretty inevitable, since they have been best friends for a time.. and considered themselves both Luffy's big brothers.] I guess you could say that.
[His talk of Punk Hazard in their home world did spark fire in his eyes though.]
Really?!
[In this sudden ecstatic tone. I mean, Hanzo yeah he's still gonna bug him about fucking dragons.. but the more chances.. the better. He stands right up then, clenching his fists excitingly and stares straight into Sanji with a refueled determined look in the eye.] Man, it would be so cool to go there. Even not now.. but when we do come back.. [The excitement, it is real.]
[For a sinking moment, it occurs to him again that Ace is... dead. That he's dead back home, and now that he isn't here, he's dead yet again. He's honestly not sure if it's a mercy or a missed opportunity that Sabo wasn't here for those few weeks Ace traveled with them on Zeta 12.
It's strange, how seeing Ace again turned Sanji's understanding of death and the finality of it on its head.]
You'd like it. Half the damn island is on fire. [He pushes himself up from the wall, walking over to the backpack he's been keeping most of his supplies in, and rooting around in it for a moment before coming back with a bottle of wine and two slightly banged up glasses.]
Sauvignon Blanc. Not my first choice of a pair, but it goes well with the seasoning. [He pops the cork out with his thumb, holding the two glasses in one hand while pouring the wine with the other. Years and years of practice make it so he doesn't spill a drop and ends up with an equal amount in both glasses.
Never underestimate the skills of a seafaring sous chef.]
To Ace. [He says quietly, as soon as he's handed off the glass. Quiet enough that the sound won't travel to the other side of the room. So that Luffy won't be tempted to leave the chaos and intrude upon Sanji and Sabo's rare moment of quiet.]
Of course. [He chuckles at the smoking chef. It wasn't like he didn't know, but he's read reports on the island being half fire.. half ice. So he found it amusing with how he said it.] I'll probably go there for a visit if I have the time.
[Being a Revolutionary, he has a lot of work going on after all!! Though he can always make the time if he asks.. or doesn't.]
I wouldn't know the types of alcohol there are, but I appreciate the gesture. [He smiles, looking over at the wine Sanji pours as he waits until he is given a glass.
He follows in the toast Sanji initialized with a few words of his own.]
May he continue to rest in peace.
[He's not accustomed enough to holding the glass Sanji handed to him.. but he cups it firmly up while his eyes are veered from view. Sabo smiles, remembering the other brother who had watched over Luffy for the time he was missing and closely has his glass near Sanji's that they were almost touching.
To give a tribute again to the late Fire Fist after having visited his grave before he landed in this world was something he wouldn't mind doing over and over again. Even amongst the snoring pirates around Sanji and himself.. it still felt peaceful. He was still unaware of the other brother having been here, but none the less..meeting with him was something he thinks about every now and then. To see him once more as adults, would've been a moment to be had.]
[If someone was going to tell Sabo about Ace having been here, it sure has hell won't be Sanji. It's not his place, first of all, but he honestly doesn't think there's much point in dwelling on the past. On what could have been, if the timing had just been a little different.
It's better, now, to simply clink his glass gently against Sabo's before swirling the alcohol in it around once, twice, before finally taking a small sip. Leaving a moment of silence and respect hanging in the air between them.
Finally, though, the silence needs to be broken. And it needs to be broken with the thing Sanji initially came here to talk about.]
[Well it doesn't seem like it would be anything big.. granted.. he's always the type to help out anyone who's
part of Luffy's crew or any of his friends. Any friend of Luffy's is going to be a friend of his. He gulps down the drink in the glass that Sanji had handed to him.
He then puts down the now empty glass, and looks up at the other Blond noticing the calm but serious expression he has while swiveling the wine glass of his. Sabo shoves a hand in one of his pockets, while the other still clutches onto the stem of his own wine glass. ]
[There's another moment of silence. Another lull broken only by the sound of Sanji inhaling and exhaling a breath of smoke.]
I meant it when I said to forget what that kid told you. [Finally, he turns to look at Sabo, though honestly he just looks tired, rather than any sort of serious or threatening.] Luffy won't give enough of a shit to ask, but Nami-san might. And what that kid said would only going to make things worse for her.
What things? What do you mean? [He asks for clarification, as if he wanted to confirm what he meant. No kid should be overlooked, and regardless of what he says, the intention was different.
He then stares at the other blond, in a serious expression. While he should be more considerable, he chooses not to, being more concerned over the matter himself.]
It's unlikely Luffy will ask but as someone who appreciates his friends and family... I'd rather you be more honest with him than hide it.
[He's had the experience to hide something huge himself as a kid....mainly that he came from a noble family. It was after some time when Luffy and Ace find out he ran away that he admits to it. He knows that if he cares about his brother that much, it's best not to keep any secrets.]
The amount of love he puts into the people he cares for, family.. friends.. nakama..it's irreplacable. You should know this, as his crewmate.
[ in the morning, sabo will find a small package waiting for him just outside his quarters. inside, he'll find a white, pouch, holding an assortment of individually-wrapped cookies, both of which were clearly handmade. beneath the pouch is the familiar alastair symbol in its traditional purple.
along with the package comes a simple card that reads:
